WHO IS RAM VASWANI?

The winner of  the European Poker Tour sanctioned Irish Winter Tournament at the weekend, Ram Vaswani, has been described by regular SportingLife contributor and eminent poker pro Simon ‘Aces’ Trumper as, at his best, “the best tournament player in Europe , especially in No Limit.”

But who is Ram Vaswani?

Well, first and foremost, Ram is one of the famed poker quartet known as the Hendon Mob. His fellow ‘Mobsters’ include seasoned professionals Barny and Ross Boatman and Joe Beevers.

He has career earnings of $1,710,851 globally and European earnings of $1,181,701. He has already picked up $691,736 in 2004, a year that has seen him make three final tables at the World Series of Poker and a second place behind Harry D in the Viktor Poker Cup prior to his €93k windfall at the Merrion Casino in Dublin on Sunday.

According to his bio on the Hendon Mob’s website, Ram is a former snooker professional who fell into poker by taking “the natural progression from one form of hustling to another.”

He maintains close ties with snooker through the management of his younger brother who is an aspirant snooker player on the fringes of the snooker pro tour.

An avid gambler who “would bet on anything that moves”, Vaswani is respected as a player with “gears” who is capable of a cautious tactical approach and a fast and aggressive one when necessary.

Vaswani is a former winner of the European Superbowl, the Dutch Master and the French championship.
