PLAYERS IN BUSINESS: TONY G

As more and more professional poker players cash in on their name. Tony G. has been quietly building up his online poker businesses with great success.

You've probably seen him on the TV, upsetting a WPT final table with his amazing antics and "trash talk". But there is much more to Tony G. than upsetting a few French poker players. He is a successful businessman, running or having an involvement in many areas of online poker.

Real name, Antanas Guoga. Tony G. is a well spoken, 30-something businessman. Born in Lithuania he emigrated to Australia as a child. These days he can be found in Vegas, London, Lithuania and all the hotbeds of tournament poker action.

After recently visiting Copenhagen, Tony emerged from some extensive meetings as the new CEO of Poker Champs. We caught up with him to get the low-down on this and his other online poker activities.

Hi Tony, good to talk to you again. So, you're the CEO at Poker Champs now. How did all this come about?

It was surprising, the board decided to give me a go. We had a big offer from one of the biggest sports betting firms and we knocked it on the head.  Pokerchamps needed somebody that believed in the future to take over.

This is quite a new poker room, what are you going to do to attract online players?

We are growing a little too fast for our own good right now, we reached 4000 players just last night, that is real and play money, its pretty amazing actually. We can hardly handle the volume this quickly, but the operating system is stable. The poker room is all organic growth, people love to play, we do absolutely no advertising at all our affiliates do all of it.

Gus Hansen is another big name associated with the poker room, what is his position exactly?

You need to ask him yourself.  I can say that he plays quite often at the site and is an important part of Pokerchamps, he is also the biggest shareholder.

With your involvement in Poker News.com you must be very busy right now, have you still got the time to play?

I am no longer involved with Pokernews, John Caldwell is the Director and I take no decisions in relation to Pokernews. I am just a shareholder there right now.

Are there any other projects in the pipeline?

Currently I have invested in many, many projects in relation to online poker, including a French version of Pokernews. I have also funded Pokerworks.com which just recently has been launched. Linda Green, a dealer from Las Vegas, is behind that site.

I am always on the look out for people in the poker industry to do joint projects with. I just like investing in these things so if anyone is out there make sure to let me know if you have any ideas.

So, the next time we see Tony G. play expect him to be wearing the Poker Champs logo with pride. Rather than selling players strategy books, seeking out lucrative contracts with online poker rooms or putting his name to a poor video games, Tony seems focused on improving the online poker environment for regular players.
